News from Kanpur: Man receives electricity bill of nearly Rs 400,000 for using a cooler, a refrigerator and two fans

High electricity bills are common during summer, but can you imagine an electricity bill of nearly four lakhs for using basic household appliances? Recently, a family in Kanpur received an inflated electricity bill of nearly ₹4 lakhs for the use of a cool box, a refrigerator and two fans.
According to a report by India Today, the family, who live in a Kutcha house with metal blinds, was shocked when they received a bill for ₹3.9 lakh. However, to the great relief of the family, the electricity board clarified that the unusually high bill was due to a technical glitch and was being rectified.
According to India Today TV, when the head of the family, Chandrashekhar, did not receive his electricity bill for four to five months, he approached the local electricity board. He was shocked to receive an unusually high bill of ₹3.9 lakh for the months.
It is important to note that the family only used one cooler, one refrigerator and two fans in their home.
Srikant Rangeela, media in-charge of Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (Kesco), told India Today TV that the electricity department officials have been informed about the issue and the consumer’s problem — which arose due to a technical glitch in the billing system — will be resolved soon.
“Due to the changes in the Kesco server, some electricity meters experienced technical glitches and could not register correct data,” India Today TV quoted Rangeela as saying.
Rangeela also assured the consumer that his problem would be resolved soon and he would not have to pay such a high bill.”
This is not the first time that a consumer has received such an inflated bill. Last month, a man in the capital Delhi received an electricity bill of over ₹30,000 that he shared on social media.
